Stars of Summer 2012

As blockbuster season approaches, these are the celebs you can soon see in a theater near you.

Summer brings warm weather, tanlines, and really bad daytime TV. It also happens to give us many of the year's biggest blockbuster films. And while many of these movies have more CGI than they do actual lines of dialogue, they wouldn't exist without the big name celebs who star in them.

Rihanna - 'Battleship'
Unlike Justin Timberlake, this pop star doesn't appear set to ditch her career in music in favor of acting just yet. That said, Rihanna will make her film debut in this summer's Battleship, a sci-fi war flick based on the popular board game of the same name.

Scarlett Johansson - 'The Avengers'
In The Avengers, Scarlett Johansson stars as a highly trained spy with an affinity for wearing leather jumpsuits. Though her character, Black Widow, doesn't have any superpowers, that doesn't stop her from kicking serious ass throughout the action-packed flick.

Kristen Stewart - 'Snow White and the Huntsman'
With its epic setting and big budget, the fantasy adventure tale gives Stewart her first post-Twilight blockbuster role. She may win critical love when she stars in the low-budget film adaption of Jack Kerouac's On the Road. But will you get to see her throw on a suit of armor and get chased by Thor (Chris Hemsworth) in that film? Didn't think so.

Robert Downey Jr. - 'The Avengers'
In 2008, Robert Downey Jr. starred in one of the most enjoyable superhero films of all time: Iron Man. In 2012, he reprises that role in another equally entertaining blockbuster: The Avengers. RDJ's comedic timing again helps make Tony Stark one of the most loveable, yet horribly conceited characters in film history.

Chris Hemsworth - 'The Avengers' and 'Snow White'
Liam Hemsworth got to say a few lines in The Hunger Games, but it's his older brother, Chris, who scored major screen time this summer. In The Avengers, he reprises his role as Thor, while in Snow White and the Huntsman, he ditches the silly red cape and greasy hair in favor of an axe and greasier hair.

Chris Evans - 'The Avengers'
Have you seen Chris Evans lately? The guy appears to have slowly morphed into a late '80s Ringo Starr. Which isn't a terrible thing. But we think he looks a lot more intimidating as Captain America. And if you agree, you should probably pony up the cash and watch The Avengers.

Gwyneth Paltrow - 'The Avengers'
Gwyneth Paltrow reprises her role as Tony Stark/Iron Man's love interest, Pepper Potts, in The Avengers. While she doesn't land loads of screen time, she does add a human element to the otherwise fantasy filled flick. And get this: She doesn't contract a deadly virus and die minutes into the movie like she did in Contagion!

Mark Ruffalo - 'The Avengers'
Among the more enjoyable aspects of The Avengers: Watching the Hulk demolish everything in his path. And while CGI definitely helped brings the scenes to life, Mark Ruffalo actually got to "play the part." The filmmakers used motion capture technology, which allowed the actor to better bring his character to life by wearing a unitard and some ping-pong balls..

Charlize Theron - 'Snow White'
When Charlize Theron isn't taping kinky sex tape parodies, the South African likes to act in real movies. Which makes sense, because she's an Oscar-winning actress. In Snow White and the Huntsman, she stars as the tyrannical Queen Ravenna who wages war against her step daughter, Snow White (Kristen Stewart).

Emma Stone - 'The Amazing Spider-Man'
Emma Stone shows off her natural blond locks in The Amazing Spider-Man, the latest reboot of the classic Marvel comic. In the film, she plays Peter Parker/Spidey's love interest, Gwen Stacy. Turns out the superhero can have feelings for women not named Mary Jane.

Christian Bale -'The Dark Knight Rises'
Partial as we are to Michael Keaton, we give full credit to Christian Bale for bringing Batman back to life. The Welsh actor returns to the big screen this summer in The Dark Knight Rises, which sadly is said to be the final installment in the extremely successful superhero reboot.

Joseph Gordon-Levitt - 'The Dark Knight Rises'
Joseph Gordon-Levitt didn't make Inception fantastic, the storyline and incredible special effects did. But he must have impressed director Christopher Nolan, because the young actor was asked to play beat cop John Blake in Nolan's latest film, The Dark Knight Rises.

Anne Hathaway - 'The Dark Knight Rises'
Chris Nolan likes working with the same stars, so it was a bit surprising to learn Anne Hathaway had been cast in The Dark Knight Rises. However, seeing as she won an Emmy for her voice over work in The Simpsons, we don't see why she should have any trouble bringing Catwoman back to life.

Marion Cotillard - 'The Dark Knight Rises'
Despite only being in the Dark Knight Rises trailer for a split second, we couldn't resist including Marion Cotillard on this list. As talented as she is gorgeous, the French star joins Joseph Gordon-Levitt as another Inception carryover.

Andrew Garfield - 'The Amazing Spider-Man'
It's only been five years since Toby Maguire last suited up in Spider-Man 3, but Andrew Garfield will soon bring the superhero back to life in The Amazing Spider-Man. Even if the film turns out as amazing as it's title implies it should, we're still unsure why this movie's being made in the first place.

Katy Perry - 'Katy Perry: Part of Me'
Just as we weren't sure why another Spider-Man movie was being made, we also couldn't figure out why anyone thought shooting a Katy Perry documentary in 3D was a good idea. Then we remembered studios can charge more  how much better life-sized Beanie Babies looked in 3D, and it all made sense.

Will Smith - 'Men In Black 3'
Is Men In Black 3 set to become the summer's funniest movie? We highly doubt that. That said, this on-set picture proves Will Smith had an absolute ball filming the movie. Of course, if you were getting paid $20 million to wear a suit and fight aliens, you'd look this happy too.
