The Best Braided Hairstyles Of 2012

Celebs hit the red carpet wearing plenty of cool 'dos, but this selection of plaited styles features some of the best looks we've seen. Check out how the stars interpret the simple braid.

The Best Braided Hairstyles
From French to fishbone, braids have become a hairstyling staple. Take a look at how some celebs have elevated the humble plaited 'do to a whole new level.

Charlize Theron
Charlize Theron's French braided 'do shows off some interesting placement. Her hair was plaited along the back hairline spanning from ear to ear and ending in a low braided bun.

Nina Dobrev and Kim Kardashian
The fishbone braid has become increasingly popular and Nina Dobrev and Kim Kardashian show off two different ways this cool option can be worn.

Dianna Agron
Dianna Agron shows another way to wear a fishbone braid by placing a plaited section along the front hairline like a headband. Meanwhile the rest of her tresses were pulled back into a simple bobby-pinned updo.

Ahna O'Reilly and Laura Whitmore
Ahna O'Reilly and Laura Whitmore both opted for a boho chic look by creating a simple French braid along their temples. This style gives just the right amount of interest while still maintaining a casual vibe.

Kristen Stewart
Kristen Stewart's cool plaited style was created by French braiding along the front hair line and continuing onto the back of the head. Then additional braided tresses were wrapped into a loose messy bun.

Shailene Woodley, Beyonce and Miley Cyrus
The simple side braid, as worn by Shailene Woodley, Beyonce and Miley Cyrus, isn't just for bad hair days or casual affairs. These stylish celebs show how this look can even be appropriate for the red carpet.

Blake Lively
Blake Lively's uneven braids and tousled tresses were so artfully arranged that the messy texture simply added to the romance of the look. Incorporating an ornate pin also left no doubt that this style would work perfectly for a formal event.

Bar Refaeli and Maria Menounos
Bar Refaeli and Maria Menounos demonstrate how fresh French braided bangs can look. The simple style is both a sweet and sophisticated way to dress up long tresses.

Sarah Michelle Gellar
Sarah Michelle Gellar's look took the double French braid and turned it into a much more grown-up version of the classic style. Incorporating volume through the crown and working ends into a loose textured bun made this 'do a perfect nighttime look for the celeb.

Kim Kardashian and Jennifer Lopez
The super-sleek, super-tight bun has been increasingly popular. Kim Kardashian and Jennifer Lopez often wear the polished style and have both shown how incorporating a glossy braid adds an element of glamour to the look.

Rihanna
With the help of some extra-long extensions, Rihanna's fabulous look featured a French braid that encircled her entire head. The lengthy ends then descend into a seamless braid that was oh-so-casually tossed over her shoulder.

Busy Philipps
Busy Philipps' fresh beachy style was perfectly paired with shimmering oversize earrings and barely-there makeup plus a juicy red lip. The French braid incorporated all of her hair into two loose plaits that were combined into a bun at the back of her head.

Blake Lively
Blake Lively wears slightly messy, complicated-looking hairstyles like nobody else. In this instance, the well-tressed celeb kept her low loose chignon from looking staid (as if that were possible) by incorporating a girlish French braid into her 'do.

Kourtney Kardashian
Kourtney Kardashian's sweet-looking style is the classic double French braid. However, instead of leaving the two plaits separate or wearing the ends in long tails, she kept the style from getting too girlish by flipping longer lengths into a simple bun.

Gwen Stefani
Leave it to Gwen Stefani to take the humble braid and use it to create something so stylish. The designing songstress showed how to take a simple plait and run with it, randomly winding it into an artful display all over the side of her head.

Carolina Crescentini
Carolina Crescentini's interesting and elegant style featured just the merest hint of a braid. A small plait barely peeked out while the lower portion of the 'do mimicked a braid by drawing back and pinning longer lengths in small sections.

Anna Paquin
Anna Paquin's complicated 'do incorporated elements of braiding techniques yet didn't actually feature a discernible standard plait. Small sections of her hair were drawn back and twisted over and under other pieces and then pinned in place at the back of her head to create the elaborate style.

Jessica Lowndes
Jessica Lowndes models a classic tightly braided style. We zoomed in on her precisely plaited 'do to note how each of the three strands making up the braid are all perfectly proportioned.

Deborah Ann Woll
Deborah Ann Woll made the most of her long silky tresses by loosely smoothing her hair back and styling it into a romantic braided bun. The lack of tension prevented the 'do from looking too severe while strands used to create the braid were kept super-smooth.
